Many people use their garages as extra storage space, but you should know that garage storage isn’t always ideal or safe.

Storing things in your garage may seem like your best option, but the fact of the matter is that some things can actually put you and your health at risk. At Garage Door City, we are dedicated to keeping your garage door working properly, but we also want to keep you safe. That’s why our garage door service experts in Brighton have come up with the following list of items that you should never store in your garage:

#1. Bedding and Clothing

Here in Colorado, our wardrobes change dramatically throughout the year, and now that it’s winter, you probably have your cold-weather clothes out. Although you may not want to keep your summer clothes and bedding inside, you should avoid storing it in the garage. Rodents and other small animals are looking for a comfortable, warm place to spend their winter, and soft clothes and bedding are very inviting.

#2. Propane Tanks

It’s all too easy to leave the valve on a propane tank partly open without even realizing it. This is why your garage isn’t a safe place to store your propane tanks. A propane gas leak can be explosive and deadly, so store your propane tanks somewhere enclosed and away from your home, like a garden shed.

#3. Canned Food

It’s always a good idea to have a supply of canned food around, but not many people realize that extreme temperatures can actually lower the shelf life of canned foods. In the event of an emergency, you don’t want to find rotted canned foods! That’s why it’s important to store your canned goods safely in your home.
